Sarah Farmer

Sarah Farmer's house, when she was a child,
was a way station of the underground railway.
She had liberal parents who put
peaceful ways to practice.

She knew Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman,
Harriet Beacher Stowe and
John Greenleaf Whittier.
In her early forties
she started a hotel in Eliot Maine
and a few years later dedicated conferences
there to Peace and religious unity.

It was called Green Acres.
The conferences there became known of
as a place where educators, philosophers
and artists could gather
and have intellectual discussions.

Hearing that the the Peace Treaty
would take place in Portsmouth,
Sarah invited Theodore Roosevelt
and the Russian and Japanese delegations
to Green Acres, where
dignitaries addressed over 300 people.

On Sept 5 Sarah Farmer was the only woman
present at the signing of the treaty.
