Artist's Statement

In 1996 we sponsored a Rwandan woman,
her daughter, sister and two nieces.
My husband and I became the family
they had lost in the Rwandan genocide.
Listening to their stories was my introduction to
the horrors of one population slaughtering another.

Today we have genocide again in Darfur.
It has been well publicized
but we remain guilty bystanders.
Have we forgotten the past
100 years of history?

1,500,000 Armenians killed in Turkey 1915-1918
7,000,000 killed by Stalin's Forced Famine in the Ukraine in 1932-35
300,000 Chinese killed by Japanese in the Rape of Nanking 1937-38
6,000,000 Jews killed in the Nazi Holocaust 1938-45
2,000,000 killed by Pol Pot in Cambodia 1975-79
800,000 Rwandans killed in 1994
200,000 Muslims killed in Bosnia Herzegovina 1992-95
and so far -- 400,000 killed in Darfur in the Sudan
